Best Practice for Titling Your Listings

Looking for a quick checklist to make sure your products have the best listing for customers to find? You're in the right place!

These are the best practices to give your items the best opportunity to be seen by customers. Your listing should be consistent with Partner Central’s guide but should contain relevant information about your products to help them stand out.

An effective title description will help with SEO (search engine optimization). Titles that follow structure and efficiently inform the search engine of the product type will perform better. Imagine being a customer and searching for a product. You want results that will match up with keywords in your search, right? That’s what makes this guide so helpful! It will give you the best chance in ranking as a match for a customer’s search.

Review these tips and apply them to your listings for create the best performing titles.

1. Titles should be descriptive and include relevant keywords.

You want to include the most relevant information in your titles, so that the search engine will easily match it to a customer’s search. Think of it as a way to immediately answer all of a customer’s initial questions about a product. That will be a good way to think about it as you begin. It’s always helpful to step into the consumer’s shoes! What do you usually type in the search bar when you want to see a certain product?

2. Avoid irrelevant words or characters and excessive capitalization.

You want your title to add to your item’s beauty, not detract with the inconsistent boldness of all caps or only capitalizing some words and letters. There is a uniform aesthetic that surrounds a page where all listings are consistent. That aesthetic will draw a consumer in and make your product more appealing.

3. Don’t use abbreviations, unless listed below.

Abbreviations can be confusing and vary based on the individual customer or product. Consistently using the full name will eliminate any confusion to perfectly fit a search. That match will then rank as high as possible. Instead of using Rg, write out the full name: Rose Gold. And instead of using Amy, write out the full name: Amethyst.

Approved abbreviations refer to the dimensions of the item. These abbreviations will help keep the listings short, while still appealing to the search engine. They are as follows:

  • Carat: ct
  • Carat Weight: ctw
  • Karat: k
  • Length: inch, mm

4. Disclose the legal use of composition in your description.

Include “Lab Created,” “Lab-Grown Diamonds” and “Cultured (pearls).” It is important to be upfront with the customer, ensuring you meet their expectations. This should be included in the listing, because it is an important part of the product.

5. Use the gemstone shape and type in the title.

The gemstone shape and type of the prominent stone are important to list in the title description as a key aspect of the jewelry piece. Examples that you can use include Round Solitaire and Princess Solitaire.

6. Don’t use Trademark and Registered Trademarks in the title.

Save this information for the long description. You don’t want to clutter the title with this information. However, it is necessary to disclose, so the long description is the perfect place to do that.

7. Don’t include “with cert” or “with certification” in product titles.

Even though certification may be important for your jewelry piece, either of these keywords are not likely to match a search. Focus more so on what makes your product unique in its description when creating a title listing.

8. Don’t include ERV/EAV/MSRP in product titles.

It is best to avoid mentioning prices or finances in the title. This will show on the PDP when the field is entered in PIM. Let your product do the talking before the numbers do it for you.

What do I do when the character limit of my listing has been reached?

The maximum character count allowed on Partner Central is 100. However, Google only reads the first 80 characters and only displays the first 60 characters.

There's no need to waste time with extra characters when neither the consumer nor Google will read it, so it’s best to stay under 80 characters. When the character limit is reached, begin by removing the following characteristics in the order given below.

  1. Size (only in necklaces and bracelets)
  2. Gemstone Color
  3. Gemstone CTW
