You’ve got the perfect product and an awesome audience ready to shop until they drop. But do you have the best pictures to advertise what you have to offer? Jedora is here to assist! Follow our helpful guide for tips on displaying the best imagery for your jewelry.
1. Keep jewelry polished and clean.
It’s best to not show your product off until you clean it off.
Try to always clean jewelry after touching it and consider using gloves when maneuvering your jewelry for photographs. Your customers pay for new, polished products, so a simple clean and dusting can eliminate re-shooting or posting pictures with smudged jewelry.

2. Consistent shooting & lighting makes all the difference.
You can’t have lights, camera, action without good lighting!
Creating a dependable template of settings, such as lighting and background colors, can ensure that each image captured can be edited accurately and beautifully. Try to avoid taking photos of your product without consistency in lighting and background setting. Lighting and background inconsistencies can confuse and distract customers, lowering the effectiveness of product photography.

3. A simple background is best.
Pick a style you like and stick with it.
It’s best to provide your customers with a simple and clean presentation of the product at hand. Focus on the jewelry (and not the scenery) is a must. Too many props or a complicated backdrop create distractions, but a simple background that complements your product is better.

4. Make sure jewelry is center stage, not your props.
Your jewelry is the star! Keep unnecessary props out of the way and let your product shine.
Try to keep the product in frame so it is always the focal point of the composition. Be careful not to include unnecessary props, as they tend to distract from the product presentation.

5. Eliminate reflections wherever possible.
It’s the shine of your product that matters, so don’t let anything in the reflection of your product steal the spotlight.
Help customers focus on your product by reducing highlight spots and camera reflections that may be visible on reflective surfaces. You can also prevent distractions on your jewelry by stopping dark objects from reflecting on shiny surfaces.

6. Clear and stable images inspire confidence.
Three legs are better than two when it comes to product photography.
Consider investing in a solid tripod system to reduce blurry photos. If you plan to use a remote shutter release for stabilization purposes, why not invest in a tripod as well? You can’t go wrong with a tripod. By stabilizing your camera, you avoid image blur, which will help your camera, if it’s focused correctly, take crystal clear photos.

7. Stay focused on the jewelry, not on the background.
No one can see your jewelry’s gleam if they can’t properly see your jewelry.
Keep your product in focus by shooting with a high aperture to reduce “fall-off.” Soft focus may also help you capture product-centered images. Try to capture sharp and crisp product images and avoid out-of-focus images. After all, if your photo looks great, so will your product!

8. Keep an accurate white balance in your photography.
Help your image display its natural colors in white light by applying white balance when it’s not.
Identifying the proper type of light source for effective white balance settings is crucial for your images. Correct white balance ensures that your photos display the accurate metal and gemstone colors for your product. Customers will always want precise and honest photos of your product’s color, so they can make the right style decisions based on what they see.

9. Model your photography from a variety of angles.
Show off more than just the best side of your product!
Always shoot a minimum of three product angles for your jewelry. Let customers view your product as if they were examining it in a physical jewelry store.
We recommend shooting a straight-on, three quarter, and undercarriage photo as shown below. Be consistent in choosing the best angles, and refrain from using the same angle for each picture of your product. Shoppers notice the same shots repeatedly and besides… where’s the creativity and fun in that for you?

10. Use Photoshop and other image editors as sparingly as possible.
Photoshop touchups are nice but representing products without filters and retouches instills confidence in your product.
A common Photoshop mistake is overdoing it, as Photoshop offers many filters and tools that are not always necessary in editing jewelry photos. Retouch your photo sparingly if possible. For example, do not use too much saturation or HDR.

To avoid over-editing your photos, keep these best practices in mind as you are shooting product photography. No amount of editing will replace stable, clear, reliable photography that showcases your product’s unique style and sparkle as accurately as possible.
