Earring Types

3-STONE

This jewelry style is characterized by the presence of a 3-stone motif at its center.  It can suspend from any link, chain, rope or cord.  The three stones may be the same stone or mixed stones, graduated, set vertically or set horizontally.

BALL

A traditional ball earring is a single bead mounted on a post.  You can also have a ball earring that can dangle it from a Euro wire, suspend it from a lever back, mount it on a threader, use a cluster of beads, or thread a bead through a hoop.

BYPASS

Bypass jewelry pieces ends cross over one another, usually with one side higher than the other.

Bypass earrings are slightly different and have a cross-over element. They may feature an X design or have open ends, soldered side by side.  The ends meet, usually with one side higher than the other, at the front of the earring.  In most bypass earrings, both open ends are clearly visible.

BUTTON

A button earring is rounded at the top and flat at the back.  Button-style earrings most often sit snugly on the ear.  They can be textured, framed with a halo, shaped like a marquis, or made of fabric.

CENTER DESIGN

Any piece of jewelry that has a design at the midpoint can be called a center-design piece.  The name calls out that the focal point of the piece is at the center of a detailed setting or accent stones.

CHANDELIER

This style is opulent, often laden with cascading stones or beads, and characterized by movement and sparkle.

CHARM

Charms are figurative designs that accent bracelets, earrings, necklaces and even rings.

CLUSTER

A cluster is a group of similar things held together in a bunch.  They can be made of beads, stones, metals or even wood.

DANGLE

Pieces that cascade are called dangles.  Characterized by their drop and motion, they almost seem to dance.

DOOR KNOCKER

Earrings of this style resemble the door accents for which they are named.  They have an element that secures to the ear and from which a hoop falls.  The hoop faces forward and can be a circle, triangle, rectangle or other shape.  These earrings are almost always post-backed.

DROP

Earrings that ‘drop’ slightly below the ear and are stationary, not dangling.

EAR CLIMBER

This style of earring consists of a single row of graduated stones and mimics a multi-pierced look.  It’s made to be worn with the largest stone at the bottom and the smaller stones climbing from the bottom of the earlobe upward.

EAR CUFF

This style earring fits around the ear.  It is usually a stylized hoop.

EARRING JACKET

Earring jackets enhance a stud-style earring.  The post of the earring slides through the jacket and then through the ear.  Many earring jackets transform a stud into a halo.  Other jackets dangle or drop, adding length.

HALO

A halo on a piece of jewelry is a frame of gemstones set around a center stone.

HOOP

A hoop earring is a circle of metal that adorns the earlobe.

HUGGIE

A hinged hoop which the sits closely "hugs" the earlobe, hiding the earring post. It may be adorned with stones or accented with removable charms.

INSIDE-OUT

These typically appear as traditional hoops, but gemstones are placed along the outside and inside, giving the look of continuous gems.

J- HOOP

J-Hoops are in a “J” shape rather than an enclosed circle. These hoops do not meet from end to end, rather there is a gap in the back portion. Backing type may vary.

MEDALLION

Medallions resemble medals (for which they are named) and may symbolize an achievement, membership, or something personally meaningful.  Religious medallions from all faiths are available, and the coin design is a common theme in this style.

STATEMENT

Statement jewelry is bold and attention-getting.  It’s often opulent and over-sized.  Statement jewelry refers to any jewelry that is eye-catching and can’t be ignored.  It’s jewelry with a message, not necessarily literal, but clear.

STUD

A stud earring is a ball, bead or bauble that fits through a hole in the earlobe.

TASSEL

A tassel is a finishing feature on a piece of jewelry.  It consists of a cluster of chains, beads, etc., that usually hangs loosely front and center.  It can be attached to the piece or suspended from a bail like a pendant.

TEARDROP

The teardrop is a shape of item and not a specific style.  Also called a pear-shape, the teardrop can dangle from a hoop or chain.

THREADER

This style earring is exclusively for pierced ears.  It features a post-style bar attached to a very fine chain.  Midway up the chain is a slim, upside-down U.  Follow the U to the opposite side and there’s another chain and finally, some element of adornment.  It’s threaded starting with the bar inserted through the lobe at the front and pulled through to the back until the U is resting (upside down) perfectly centered through the earlobe.
